Since returning from my exchange at RMIT University in Melbourne, I have constantly been asked the same generic question — How was Australia? I never quite know how to fully summarize my exchange and often find myself struggling to answer the question, so much so that my answers often come out bland and almost unforgiving. “Good” I say, however sometimes on a better day I say, “great.” Other questions such as Did you surf? or What was your favourite memory? are a little easier to answer- yes, I did surf (once), and I have many favourite memories from my exchange to pick from.

Every year since 2007, the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) has hosted Australian students from RMIT University for a two week study tour. This summer, TRSM and RMIT celebrated the 10th anniversary of the tour, which also coincided with Canada 150!
The tour consisted of lectures, cultural visits, industry site tours, and presentations. Sandra Findlay, an RMIT master’s student in Business Administration reflected on her trip to Toronto:

With a worried look on his face, my younger brother said to me “Don’t get eaten by spiders”. He was worried the Goliath Bird Eater spider he’d seen in a “Deadliest Things” YouTube video would chomp me.
This sentiment entirely reflected people’s opinion of Australia after I told them about my upcoming exchange at Curtin University. They couldn’t understand why someone would risk their life like that. It seemed daft. As they saw it, Australia was home to the deadliest most poisonous things on Earth.

3 months ago I left Canada for my semester abroad in Brisbane: the largest city on Australia’s east coast! It was my first time travelling alone and I was excited and terrified. Once I landed, met my roommates and learned more about Brisbane, I was thrilled to spend the semester here. So far my journey in Australia has been the most amazing experience of my life and I am only half way through!
