What People Don’t Tell You About Going On Exchange

BY HUDA AKHTAR, THIRD YEAR STUDENT IN HUMAN RESOURCES, TRSM

What people don’t tell you about studying abroad is that you’ll want to go home about 2 days into your trip. No one tells you how hard it really is settling into a place you have absolutely no prior knowledge of. People don’t speak of the first week you arrive into your chosen city, they don’t mention the restless nights thinking about how you’re going to manage your commute, your work – your stress piles up.

Little did I know, the best is yet to come.

The Experience of a Lifetime

By Victoria Scarpelli, Undergraduate student in Global Management, Ted Rogers School of Management

When choosing which university I wanted to attend, I always knew I wanted to go on exchange at some point throughout my studies. This was one of my main reasons for deciding to attend Ryerson University. Their business program offered so many choices of schools in countries all over the world. In my 2nd semester of my 3rd year of studies, I was finally able to make this dream a reality by attending SKEMA Business School in Nice, France for a semester with my best friend. We decided to stay in a little town just outside the main city called Antibes. As soon as we arrived, I instantly fell in love. The culture, cuisine, the art and history, it was all just so incredible. Not to mention, it was winter and 15 degrees outside and sunny!!

Toronto → Melbourne: Moving from the Fourth Most Livable City in the World to the First

By Tiffany Rioflorido, Undergraduate student in Business Management, Ted Rogers School of Management

Since returning from my exchange at RMIT University in Melbourne, I have constantly been asked the same generic question — How was Australia? I never quite know how to fully summarize my exchange and often find myself struggling to answer the question, so much so that my answers often come out bland and almost unforgiving. “Good” I say, however sometimes on a better day I say, “great.” Other questions such as Did you surf? or What was your favourite memory? are a little easier to answer- yes, I did surf (once), and I have many favourite memories from my exchange to pick from.

Experiences One Could Only Dream Of

By Genevieve Taylor, Graduate of the School of Business Management, Ted Rogers School of Management

The thought of exploring the world is exciting and exhilarating, it gets your blood pumping and imagination flowing. Traveling to new countries and cities is both eye opening and breathtaking, and yet many don’t realise how emotional and frightening it can also be.

For my last semester of my graduating year I decided to apply to the Ryerson International exchange program and begin the trip of a life time in Lisbon, Portugal.

Scarborough to Sweden – A Semester Abroad

By Varunan Muthiah, Undergraduate student in Business Technology Management, Ted Rogers School of Management

I remember seeing the posters for the Ryerson exchange program my first week of university. I thought it would be a great experience but didn’t think it would ever happen. Little did I know two years later I’d be on a plane to Sweden for 6 months. I didn’t know much about Sweden when applying but I knew it would be a place that would take me out of my comfort zone. This was going to be the first time I was away from family this long and living on my own. I was excited but also nervous. I had heard great things from a student who went there last year but I was still worried. I didn’t know anyone there and didn’t know if they’d have as many food options compared to Toronto. I knew it would be tough but I was determined to make the most of this experience.

Thoughts From a Mate in Australia

By Andrew Walls, Undergraduate student in the School of Business Management , Ted Rogers School of Management

With a worried look on his face, my younger brother said to me “Don’t get eaten by spiders”. He was worried the Goliath Bird Eater spider he’d seen in a “Deadliest Things” YouTube video would chomp me.

This sentiment entirely reflected people’s opinion of Australia after I told them about my upcoming exchange at Curtin University. They couldn’t understand why someone would risk their life like that. It seemed daft. As they saw it, Australia was home to the deadliest most poisonous things on Earth.
